Nearly 1 In 10 Youth Gamers Addicted To Video Games
Aired: June 12, 2009

A shocking new study has found that nearly one in 10 young people who play video games are literally addicted to them.

Iowa State University psychology professor Douglas Gentile analyzed the data from a Harris Poll survey of 1,178 Americans between the ages of eight and 18, and found that nearly 10 percent meet the standards for pathological gambling -- causing problems with their families, friends, schoolwork, or mental health because of their video game playing habits.

How can you tell if your child is addicted?  The pathological gamers played video games 24 hours per week, about twice as much as other gamers.  They were more likely to have video game systems in their bedrooms, received lower grades in school, had more health problems, and even stole to get more games.
